One of the first festivals to be established in the newly independent Estonia, the Nyyd New Music Festival has been running since 1991. As the name suggests, it specialises in presenting new works by composers from around the world. According to creative director (and composer) Erki-Sven Tuur, quoted on Bonjour L’Estonie, the idea has always been ‘to introduce to Estonian audiences something fresh, artists who are not totally established in their own homeland.’
There are some big names this year including a work by Georgy Ligeti (most famous for scoring films for Stanley Kubrick), but also brand new work from 13 different composers. The opening event on 12 October includes the orchestra from the Estonian National Opera, a Latvian choir, and performers from Sweden.
