Lithuania becomes an alcohol-free zone (but only for a day)

Posted on August 22nd, 2007 · 1 comment · ShareThis

Visitors in Lithuania on September 1st may notice something slightly odd. For one day only, to mark the first day of the new school year, alcohol sales will be completely banned. This covers not only bars and restaurants, but hotel minibars and even ships flying Lithuanian flags.

Predictably, the move has upset restaurateurs and the Baltic Times reports on plans to get around the ban:

One solution is to take money in advance so that drinks are actually purchased the day before. Others plan to serve alcohol “for free,” while coincidentally hiking the price of food for one day only. A third option being considered is running bar ‘tabs’ throughout the day, and asking customers to settle up on the stroke of midnight, Sep. 2.

Apologies to regular readers, by the way, for the appalling length of time since the last post. A ridiculous workload was to blame, but with luck things are now back on track.

Hmm, interesting! Sort of like October 2nd in India, when alcohol isn’t available anywhere in the country. This day is Mahatma Gandhi’s birthday.
