An article in the Estonian newspaper SL Ohtuleht – and summarised in English on the EuroTopics website – discusses the tougher alcohol licensing laws which have been in force in the country, and also the recent rises in the price of booze. The article argues that these moves are specifically designed to deter certain types of tourists:
We shouldn’t deceive ourselves that all the visitors to Estonia are coming just to admire our beautiful countryside and the sites of interest.
Most of them are vodka tourists, shoppers or brothel patrons, and for them the law of the free market applies.
According to the newspaper, the idea is that as prices rise these types of tourists will go elsewhere. Specifically, the article makes reference to Finns loading up with cheap drinks and – of course – British stag parties.
