The Baltic Times has posted an entertaining piece by Joel Alas, who went out in Tallinn on June 5th – the Tuesday night that the new smoking ban was introduced. The journalist finds many of the city’s bars empty, with everyone outside on the pavement instead. He finds himself less than impressed by the atmosphere of the smoke-free bars, and wonders about the odd smells which were previously covered up. He does admit though that things may well get better:
They say the first phase of quitting is always the toughest. Last weekend Tallinn was grumpy. Maybe her mood will improve as she clears her lungs.
The article is interesting for tourists in two respects. Firstly, it is a reminder that the ban is now in place and that outdoor drinking is on the agenda this summer. Secondly, it indirectly functions as a round-up of several of the city’s drinking dens such as Levist Valjas and the Valli Bar.
