Extreme Crafts in Vilnius

Posted on June 7th, 2007 · No comments yet · ShareThis

The CRAFT magazine blog has posted photographs from the intriguingly-named Extreme Crafts programme at the Contemporary Events Centre, Vilnius. The centre’s website describes the background to the series of events:

Handicrafts are increasingly being used by artists and designers as a source of inspiration and method of manufacture. Many crafts are experiencing resurgence in popularity; they are no longer the bastion of elderly ladies, but people from all ages and backgrounds. Punk knitting, origami with an agenda and epic cross-stitch have surged in numbers. In wake of the supposed death of local community, self-organised craft groups such as ‘Stitch and Bitch‘ have flourished in recent times.

Events began on 25th May and run until 14th July. The varied programme so far has included plenty of visitor interaction, such as the opportunity to bring along something you own and make a musical instrument out of it. Upcoming events include a knitting marathon – with its own warm-up event – and a session on customising your MySpace page or website (and also to make storage pockets for your MP3 player).
