Vintage car show in Vilnius may lead to permanent museum

The Baltic Times reports on the antique automobile show which is currently running at the Litexpo Exhibition centre in Vilnius. Drawn from the private collection of Latvian racing driver Stasys Brundza, its 52 exhibits include a range of vehicles spanning the history of car manufacturing. A further 20 exhibits will be added over the course of the exhibition, which runs until 28th September.

“It is a cultural heritage as important as architecture, art or music,” says Brundza. Indeed where else could you see the car that might have taken Lithuania’s inter-war president Antanas Smetona to his meetings, the Porche 911 that Brundza drove around the streets of Vilnius during Soviet times, or a huge Cadillac from 1912?

Brundza himself was a distinguished competitor in motor racing, winning the ‘Tour d’Europe’ in 1974. He started collecting cars in 1981. Although it is a temporary exhibition, this is considered to be a step on the way to having a permanent automobile musuem in the city. Riga, incidentally, already has one.
